Selected as a Feature Exhibition for Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival 2018

A collaboration between photographer Michelangelo Di Battista and illustration artist Tina Berning, Confluence II is a body of work merging photography, illustration, painting and collage which highlights the multi- faceted nature of female beauty.

Given a single photographic image and one attempt to reinvent it, Berning manipulates Di Battista’s duotone prints by scratching their surfaces, adding layers of paint or cutting them to pieces.

Confluence II is an interdisciplinary dialogue which subtly disrupts the visual codes of fashion, portraiture and the female figure. Where the image of conventional female beauty is typically polished in post-production for high fashion publications, Tina Berning applies her own analogue ‘retouching’ to the women’s images. By transforming, highlighting or re-imagining their experience, Berning questions the certainties of aesthetics and beauty.

In a photographic career spanning over 20 years, Michelangelo Di Battista has worked throughout the world with the biggest names in the fashion industry and published his photographs in the most prestigious magazines and journals.

Tina Berning is a Berlin-based artist and illustrator. Her award-winning work has been published extensively, exhibited internationally and is featured in numerous anthologies.

The two met during a Vogue fashion shoot in 2007 and have since collaborated in three solo exhibitions internationally, including major solo exhibitions at the renowned Camera Work Gallery in Berlin and Fotografiska in Stockholm.

Living in different cities and working with differing tools, their partnership displays a unity of interest and focus. The collaboration is a temporal exercise in trust and an interchange of control resulting in a single form.
