South African illustration artist Kirsten Sims combines the seemingly ordinary with a curious twist to reveal the whimsy of everyday life. The series is about both real and imagined moments, conversations, events, occasions and memories that provoke the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. The 'middle of nowhere' is also a starting point for her pictures: words, sentences and images from the middle of books, songs and movies serve as titles and texts to be illustrated. Her work is whimsical, exaggerated, gestural and playful. She explores the relationship between image and text and approaches every picture as a story to tell with as few brush strokes as possible. This exhibition is a continuation of her recently sold out Cape Town show. For the Canadian edition, Sims added the element of the unknown by interpreting and illustrating Canadian themes having never been here. "I like to use humour in my work to express my opinions and experiences and enjoy the freedom and power that painting gives me to subtly and gently make fun of the world I live in." - Kirsten Sims, June 2015
